About Magnephy

Magnephy is a Stockholm-based start-up that combines advanced microscopy and AI to explore the nanoscale of biology.

Founded in 2023 as a spin-off from KTH Royal Institute of Technology/SciLifeLab after nearly a decade of research on novel methods within microscopy techniques.

We now offer our technology as a service to pharmaceutical companies, and our mission is to provide quantitative nanoscale insights into pharmaceutical efficacy, mechanism of action, and targeting directly in tissue samples.

Using high-resolution microscopy and advanced image analysis, we visualize treatment effects such as changes in cell structure, biomarker distribution, and tissue organization. These insights make it easier to evaluate efficacy and guide the next step in development.

With over 10 years of experience in advanced quantitative kidney imaging, our team has world-leading expertise in microscopy, computer vision and medical application dedicated to bring you the best results.

Co-founder, Advisor

Hans Blom

Docent in Biological Physics at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology),
Head of Unit for Integrated Microscopy Technologies at SciLifeLab, Stockholm.

He obtained his M.Sc. in Engineering Physics from Uppsala University (with exchange studies abroad), and his Ph.D. in Biophotonics from KTH (in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet) in 2003. After post-doctoral work (including in the Nobel Laureate Stefan W. Hell’s group at the Max-Planck Institute), he has focused on super-resolution microscopy and its applications in cell biology, neuroscience, cancer, and specifically kidney pathology.

His current research aims include the development of 3D optical imaging of kidney tissue (with nanoscale resolution), improving imaging pipelines for pathological evaluation, collaborations with clinical nephrology, and using microscopy to inform precision medicine.

Thomas Benzing

Professor of Medicine and Chairman of Department II of Internal Medicine at the University of Cologne.

His research focuses on molecular nephrology, especially on age-related kidney diseases, cilia signaling, and intercellular communication. His lab uses model organisms (from C. elegans and Drosophila to mice and human tissue), as well as proteomics, live imaging, genetics, and systems biology to uncover mechanisms underlying kidney pathology.

He has played a leading role in several large collaborative and translational efforts, including the newly funded Transregional Collaborative Research Centre (TRR 422) “PodoSigN – Podocyte Signaling Networks,” which aims to elucidate molecular control processes in kidney filtration.

Katarzyna Bozek

Katarzyna Bozek is Professor for Data Analytics in Bioinformatics at the University of Cologne, based in the Institute for Biomedical Informatics and Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC).

Her work centers on the development and application of machine learning (including deep learning), statistical and algorithmic approaches to analyze large, complex biomedical datasets. Her research spans areas such as image and video data, pathology, ageing, nephrology, eye medicine, and behavior.

She has built a research group with external and internal collaborations, secured significant third-party funding (including from German national programs), and is involved in translational digital medicine — bridging computational method development with medical and clinical applications.
